K-Dot's rare TV appearance has dancers, art, and a whole bunch of niceness.
Kendrick Lamar is oddly unique; he has an ability to fit in within mainstream music culture, remixing the singles of massive artists like Taylor Swift; but somehow he also still maintains the humble attitude of an indie rapper just starting out.
K-Dot's positive take on his career means he was actually a surprisingly great fit to guest star on The Ellen Show this week, where he performed To Pimp A Butterfly song "These Walls" in a rare TV appearance. Accompanied by a dancing couple onstage, Kendrick breathed life into the soulful track while a guest artist created a painting of the couple, which they all gifted to Ellen after the set. Aww.
Ellen didn't hesitate to sing his praises, mentioning his Grammy win for "i" and the California State Senate honouring him with the Generational Icon Award.
"It means everything to me because I know a lot of kids in my neighbourhood [are] watching TV and saying, ‘You know what? I want to be a positive influence just like Kendrick Lamar, or whoever’s out there doing something for the good of the culture and for music," he admitted.
Of course, his collab with T-Swift on the video for "Bad Blood" came up in conversation too. "I've always been a fan of hers, and she was a fan of my music; then she reached out and we got it done," he explained. He makes it sound so easy.
