How to be a goddess 101
There's no two words about it. This has been the year of the rad girl. From Taylor Swift giving us squad goals to Hailee Steinfeld's epic self love anthem, we've spent the last year celebrating the gift that keeps on giving--kick ass girls.
This one is a no-brainer. Halsey has proven time and time again that she is just about the coolest pop star on the rise right now. At the start of 2015 she was a virtual unknown but, by summer time, "Halsey" was the name on everyone's lips. She is completely open about her sexuality, her politics, and her beliefs and she is definitely leading a new wave unconventional but amazing pop stars. Whether she is trying out a new hair colour or speaking out about her beliefs, we can always trust Halsey to keep it 100%.
After spending a few years out of the game and binning an entire record, Canadian alt-pop act, Grimes, has returned with a vengeance. The 27 year old singer released Artangels last month as a follow up to 2012's Visions, and it may be one of the best pop records of the year. She is close with Jay Z, has worked with Jack Antonoff on this year's "Entropy", and not afraid to be her wonderfully weird self. Can we be Grimes when we grow up?
This year, Hunger Games actress and all around cool person, Amandla Stenberg addressed something super important. We got to know her a little bit better when she uploaded a video addressing the issue of cultural appropriation. She received a lot of attention for the video (some negative and some positive) but she managed to handle everything with inhuman levels of grace. That, and the fact that her mini girl squad is LIT.
Swedish Singer, Zara Larsson may be a newcomer to the music scene but she's already made her mark on pop. Her duet with MNEK was certainly one of the best songs of the summer but her viral condom post had us all saying "YAAAAS GIRL. SAY IT LOUDER." Any young artist willing to speak up on awkward penis stuff is okay in my book.
Zendaya has done everything right this year. She's looked good, handled controversy with grace, and completely given us style and personality goals. She is unafraid to be herself and has to be the coolest Disney alumnus in recent times. We know we'll be seeing a lot more of her next year in the form of new music and acting ventures and we're 100% here for it.
Even though she didn't have an album out this year, Lorde has spent the majority of 2015 being the person we wish we were. She stood up for herself when she parted ways with her manager, featured on "Magnets" (the best song on Disclosure's new album), and consistently supported other artists (especially female artists). Her looks were fierce, vibes were assertive and confident, and opinions on point. Need we say more? Lorde is a goddess.
Melanie released her debut album this year and has done a pretty amazing job of serving up looks and vibes for the Gods. She's outspoken, super talented, and multi-dimensional when it comes to her artistry. She may garner comparisons to some other artists currently on the rise but we know Melanie is in a league of her own.
