"Wildest Dreams" is great and all, but this fan favourite from "1989" deserves its moment in the sun.
Earlier today, Taylor Swift announced that not only will 1989 be getting a fifth single, but it's an incredibly unlikely choice.
Just wanted to let you know that the next single from 1989 will be........... Wildest Dreams.— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) August 5, 2015
"Wildest Dreams", while definitely a great song, has sparked some reaction amongst fans since the news came from Tay. And the same question is on everybody's mind:
Everyone has been waiting for what they believe is 1989's perfect single... but we're all still waiting. And while we get prepped for "Wildest Dreams" to drop, here are our top three reasons why we still think "New Romantics" is a better choice:
"New Romantics" is a fierce favourite among the Swifties, and they've been gunning for its release as a single since the album came out. The reaction today has been a little bit evident that that opinion hasn't changed.
WHEN THE WHOLE FANDOM TAUGHT 'NEW ROMANTICS' WILL BE HER NEXT SINGLE BUT THEN BOOM 'WILDEST DREAMS' TAY STOP MESSING W/ OUR FEELINGS— °trish° (@swiftasy) August 5, 2015
WILDEST DREAMS IS THE NEXT SINGLE. I WAS ROOTING FOR NEW ROMANTICS— moonlightbæ // dane (@osnapitzdane) August 5, 2015
It's gonna be like 2056 and I'm still gonna be asking Taylor to make New Romantics a single— cing (@alltootswift) August 5, 2015
"New Romantics" is only available on the deluxe version of 1989 (along with "Wonderland"); and while mega-Swifties have been jamming out to it since the album's release, less obsessed listeners might have no idea of the song's existence.
Since Tay has already had unparalleled success with the album's release and the first four singles, a release from the deluxe version would not only be a huge refresher of her music in the mainstream, but would also work as some additional promo for the deluxe version. It's just good business sense; and we all know how business-savvy Tay is these days.
IT JUST IS OKAY
But seriously, we've gotten a wide range of different styles from the singles of 1989 so far: the dance-pop fun of "Shake It Off", the stylistic lyrical beauty of "Blank Space", the filler video for "Style" (sorry) building up to the badass lady-filled remix of "Bad Blood".
What's missing from Tay is a good summer dance jam, and there's just enough summer left to rock out to "New Romantics" on the dancefloor. Not only that, the song is all about dealing with adversity, and coming into your own as a person surrounded by friends - a perfect summary of what 1989 is all about.
"Wildest Dreams", while a beautiful, ethereal and emotive track (which admittedly is still very different from the other four singles), just doesn't seem like it will have the same impact as a single release. But, we're happy to be proven wrong; time will tell.
Seriously if you don't think that's one of the best lyrics on 1989 then we're gonna have a fight.
What do you think? Was "Wildest Dreams" the right call, or should we still hold out hope for "New Romantics" being single No. 6? Vote in the poll below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
