It's been years since J.K. Rowling graced the world with her final installment of the much beloved Harry Potter series. If you're like us, you re-read them when you can but sometimes you just need to change things up a bit. Here are some suggestions that should satisfy each and every precious Harry Potter fan out there.
The Fire Sermon follows in the vein of many dystopian novels but with supernatural elements. The story tells the story of Cass (a girl who can sense the future) and her twin brother Zach who live in a world where everyone is born with a twin—Alphas and Omegas. Zach is elevated to a top position and is forced to kidnap and hide his gifted sister from those who wish to harm her.
A Great and Terrible Beauty is about a group of teenagers at an all-girl boarding school called Spence academy. Main character, Gemma Doyle is sent to Spence after the death of her mother but comes face to face with a parallel world and an evil sorceress called Circe. Circe is both enticing and next-level evil and it’s up to Gemma and her friends to defeat the greatest darkness they have ever known.
Bridey Corkhill is a 16-year-old who has feared the sea ever since it took her grandfather seven years prior. When women in Bridey’s life begin to go missing, she sees a dark figure near the harbor and believes it may the same mysterious beast that lured her grandfather to his death. With the help of the local witch and a stranger called Fynn, Bridey must get to the bottom of the missing villagers and perhaps her own grandfather’s death.
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is an alternative history set in the 1800s in a version of Britain where magic was once widely practiced. Mr Gilbert Norrell sets out to restore the reputation of magic with his pupil Jonathan Strange.
The Magicians is the first book in Lev Grossman’s trilogy. It follows high school senior Quentin Coldwater who has always dreamed of magical otherworlds and soon finds himself enrolled at an exclusive college for magic in upstate New York. Quentin soon discovers that magic is not all the whimsy he thought it would be.
Callum Hunt has been warned against magic his whole life. So, when it comes time for the Iron Trials that decide whether he is admitted into the Magisterium, Callum is determined to fail. Unfortunately, things don’t exactly go as planned and he is thrust into a world of magic that he had been brought up to despise.
Traveler, Kell is a magician with the rare ability to pass between universes. Set in the many parallel versions of London, Kell acts as an ambassador but also a smuggler of sorts to those who long to see a version of their world they have never known. Things get risky when Kell meets a young thief named Lily Bard and they become entangled in a plot to tear down the veil between the parallel worlds.
