Seriously?! This cannot be real.
Part of Netflix's USP is how affordable it is. For $8.99 in the US and £6.99 in the UK, you can get access to tons of original and syndicated content from around the globe. Sorry for the sales pitch but Netflix is cool, okay?
You know who probably enjoys Netflix quite a bit? People who live in Chicago. Unfortunately for them, they're about to get taxed extra for subscription services like Netflix and Spotify. City residents will be subject to a 9% tax on cloud services, a part of the city's "Amusement Tax" initiative.
This is an expansion of an already existing piece of legislation that levied a 9% tax on activities like bowling and whatever else people do for fun. I'm not actually sure. I assume just bowling.
Chicago's legislation is the first of its kind anywhere and raises some interesting questions about how cities can and will levy taxes against cloud services in the future.
a) charges paid for the privilege of watching electronically delivered television shows, movies or videos are subject to the amusement tax, if the shows, movies or videos are delivered to a patron (i.e., customer) in the City…City of Chicago
b) charges paid for the privilege of listening to electronically delivered music are subject to the amusement tax, if the music is delivered to a customer in the City;
c) and charges paid for the privilege of participating in games, on-line or otherwise, are subject to the amusement tax if the games are delivered to a customer in the City.
Good luck and godspeed, Chicagoans. We shall keep you in our prayers.
